Prevent Water Damage

water damaged basementWater can be one of the most damaging forces to a home. It can lead to problems such as paint peeling, roach infestations and rotting wood just to name a few–and can cause thousands of dollars in damages. One of the most crucial steps in ensuring that your house is protected is to check for signs of water damage in the following places:

Roofing: Leaks are more prominent around chimneys and attic vents, so as you check for those leaks, also check the shingles around those areas and replace when needed.

Windows and Doors: Check all cracks and corners for water damage. If you see peeling paint, it’s a sign of water damage to the wood. Don’t forget to check areas around the flashing (a thin strip of metal found around doors, windows, roofing, chimneys, etc.).

Plumbing: Inspect your water heater for signs of rust or water around the base, and check for leaking faucets or rusty pipes.

Vents: Check your clothes dryer vents, exhaust vents, attic vents, etc. These may not only allow water to enter your home, they can also provide entry areas for pests if not properly sealed.

Attic: Check your attic for obvious holes, cracks or any place air can escape, as these can result in ice dams in the winter, which can back up underneath shingles and leak into your attic and home.

Basements: Inspect your sump pump monthly to ensure it is functioning properly to drain water from your home’s foundation. A battery backup is recommended.

If you notice any signs of water damage, contact the professionals at Ashton Laine as soon as possible. We can repair virtually any problem inside or outside your home, potentially saving you thousands.
